Over the past couple of months I’ve gone back and forth about what I would write for this initial post.  My head has been telling me “Keep it simple and to the point. Focus on the benefits people will get for coming to this site”, but my heart has been saying “Tell everyone the real reason you’re making this site.”

At the end of the day, we’re all storytellers here, so here’s my story and why I created this site:

For most of my life I’ve been behind the scenes of a church.  My dad was the pastor of my church growing up, my cousin was the pastor of my youth group, and my first “real” job out of college was – you guessed it – at a church.

Bible in hand, ready to take on the world.

I remember as a kid I would sit next to the overhead projector at the front of the church swapping out transparency sheets with the lyrics on them during worship so the congregation could keep up with my mom and the rest of the worship team.  When powerpoint came along I was clicking away at those slides back in the sound booth.  And when the first iMac came out I bought my first mini-dv camera to go along with it and became the defacto “video guy”.

Hey look, that's me all growed up!

Fast forward to today and I’ve been making films for churches for the past 15 years as a volunteer, as an independent contractor, and as a full-time employee.  In every role I’ve learned so many valuable things, but there are two in particular that have really stuck with me:

#1. A compelling film is one of the most powerful ways to share the heart of God with the world.

#2. The filmmakers who are tasked with creating those films are often overlooked, overworked, and under equipped.

The gap that exists between #1 & #2 is filled with tension, resistance, and lots of unknowns.  It’s also filled with miracles, victories and wonderful discoveries.  I’ve experienced all of the above and my hope is that the lessons that I’ve learned along the way as well as the stories and insights from the Church Film School contributors will become a source of inspiration, encouragement, training, and community for you.

You have an incredible calling on your life and you are extremely important.  God is super excited to be on this journey with you and I can’t wait to see what you create together.

I hope you enjoy this site.

Ps.  I send out a personal email that includes behind the scenes videos from my current projects, scene breakdowns from past projects, tips that will add production value to your films, and deeper insights on how to become a better church filmmaker.  If you’d like to receive that email, sign up below.
